Information for Chicago Residents on Purchase and Possession of Firearms
The City of Chicago has recently passed an ordinance allowing its residents to purchase and possess certain firearms, including handguns, for the purpose of home defense. There are strict rules outlined in the ordinance with which residents must comply.
Here are four steps in the order they must be completed:
Apply for a Firearm Owner's Identification Card (FOID). FOID Applications are available a local Police Stations, on-line at
the Illinois State Police web site, or you can visit G.A.T. Guns where we will take your ID photo, help you fill out the form and mail it to the Illinois State Police for you. Our fee for this service is $19.99 which includes the $10.00 FOID fee. FOID cards are good for 10 years.
Take a Chicago compliant training course - details on our class are coming soon. State and local governments do not yet have details on the exact outline of the class.
Take your FOID card and proof of the training course completion to the Chicago Police Department to get a Chicago Firearms Permit (CFP).
Register your gun with the Chicago Police Department.You can register only ONE gun per 31 day period with the CPD.

The cost is $125.00. This includes the range fee, ammunition, and multiple gun rentals.
