NRA Chief Range Safety Officer

This course will certify you as an NRA Certified Chief Range Safety Officer.

NRA Chief Range Safety Officer Course
Please note: We will have the class start and stop times at a later date. Please anticipate approximately 8 hours per class day.
This comprehensive 20-hour course provides the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to train and supervise NRA Range Safety Officers, as well as to develop and implement Range Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Prerequisite:
Participants must hold a current NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) certification.
Course Structure:
The program is delivered in three parts:
  • Day 1 – Basic Instructor Training (BIT):
Learn the fundamentals of being an NRA Instructor, including instructional methods, how students learn, and the business of teaching.
Note: If you have completed BIT within the past 24 months and have a course completion card, you are not required to attend Day 1. However, participation is strongly recommended, as the BIT curriculum is regularly updated.
  • Day 2 – Teaching the RSO Course:
Work in teams to teach the NRA Range Safety Officer course you previously completed as a student. Bring your RSO student manual from your original class. All firearms and training materials will be provided.
This session emphasizes behind-the-scenes preparation, exercise setup, and best practices in firearm handling and malfunction clearing. SOP development assignments will be distributed at the conclusion of Day 2.
  • Day 3 – SOP Development and Review:
Present and review your assigned sections of a Range SOP document. Discussions will focus on safety, liability reduction, insurance considerations, and operational efficiency.
Special topics include handling unique range scenarios, such as special event handling, employee firearm rules, and suicide detection, awareness, and prevention, and their implications for range policies.
Students will complete an open-book exam at the end of Day 3. Each participant will receive NRA Basic RSO lesson plans.
Materials to Bring
  • Your RSO student manual from your original class
  • A 3” heavy-duty D-ring binder
